Outside automobile salvage and storage of nearly 1,000 vehicle scrapped for parts was observed during the initial due diligence. This property is also adjacent and downgradient to an existing North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Superfund site, a known source of chlorinated solvent impacted groundwater that had migrated off-site. Shannon & Wilson completed a soil and groundwater investigation at the auto salvage property mindful of the upgradient source of chlorinated solvents that had been previously identified at a neighboring site.
Under the Phase II ESA, Shannon and Wilson worked to confirm/refute the existence of four major constituents found during the Phase I ESA: petroleum products, methyl-tert-butyl-ether (MTBE), metals, and ethylene glycol, and we conducted physical and chemical characterization of the subsurface soil and groundwater at the subject property. It was found that the subject property was not the source of groundwater or soil contamination based on analytical results from groundwater monitoring wells, groundwater flow models, and soil borings. Thesee Phase I & II ESAs were used to obtain liability protection (covenant not to sue) under the NCDEQ regulations.
