PROJECTS

CDOT Region 4 State Highway 14B

CLIENT Colorado Department of Transportation

Location Larimer, CO

This project consists of safety improvements to six locations between mile posts (MP) 84 and 120 of State Highway (SH) 14, approximately 7 to 30 miles west of Fort Collins, Colorado.

The six segments ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 miles in length and primarily consist of a 2 foot widening of the hot mix asphalt pavement surface to each side of the roadway. Each segment is located along the Cache la Poudre River valley and consists of single eastbound and westbound travel lane.

The SH 14 alignment is a gradual upward slope increase to the west with the roadway grade changing from approximately 5,300 to 7,700 feet from the eastern to western most improvement segments. One improvement segment located from MP 113.5 to MP 114.0 consists of a relatively tight radius following a bend in the Cache la Poudre River, and the proposed improvements include possible adjustments to the roadway profile superelevation transitions, mill and overlay, installation of a high friction surface course to the HMA surface, and the two foot roadway widening.

Shannon & Wilson conducted a pavement subsurface investigation of each safety improvement area, for the proposed overlay areas we assessed the condition of the existing pavement for potential rehabilitation, developed pavement thickness recommendations for the widening, and overlay areas, and provided paving material recommendations.
